Cliff and The Shadows 50th Anniversary Tour 2009
Twenty years since their last performance together, Cliff and The Shadows have reunited to celebrate their 50th anniversary in the music industry! In the late '50s and early '60s, Cliff and The Shads dominated the British popular music scene, enjoying record-breaking solo and joint careers, and establishing their undisputed place in pop history.
Between them they notched up no less than 19 No 1 hits, including Living Doll, Travelling Light, Please Don't Tease, Bachelor Boy, Wonderful Land and Apache, and starred together in the ever-popular films The Young Ones, Summer Holiday and Wonderful Life.
The UK portion of their Golden Anniversary tour is now complete with dates in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa still to come. Several of our TSC members made the trip to the UK to see the show and have returned unanimous in their praise for the quality of the performances.
Likewise the press has by and large been equally favorable in their concert reviews. The following is an extract from a typical review:
"Say what you like about Cliff's sense of style, but fourteen number one singles across five consecutive decades earns one the right to wear whatever garish pink jacket you like.
Whatever the man had before, he's still got it. His voice remains smooth and accurate, while each smile from his young-looking face (he celebrated his 69th birthday on October 14th) sends parts of the (not a whole lot younger) audience into an adolescent tizzy.
Strong vocal harmonies from The Shadows give the material a needed edge and it quickly becomes apparent that the real star may not be Cliff after all.
When the Shadows are left to their own instrumental devices, for a segment on either side of the interval, the notion is confirmed, showing just how lucky Cliff was to be blessed with these musicians fifty years ago.
If Cliff helped to shape pop music, then his backing band helped to shape rock 'n 'roll, and on the evidence of these shows, it's quite obvious to whom the real legendary status belongs."
