The Shadows are Britain's most successful instrumental and vocal group with a grand total of 69 (including twelve No.1's) UK hit singles: 35 (including five No.1's) as 'The Shadows' and 34 (including seven No.1's) with Cliff Richard', from the 1950s to the 2000s. According to the Guinness Book of Hit Singles and Albums, they are the third most successful UK charted hit-singles act, behind Cliff Richard (2nd) and Elvis Presley (1st). They are also the world's most successful backing group of all time.
BAND MEMBERS
The original line-up of Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Jet Harris and Tony Meehan remains iconic in the minds of die-hard fans. Tony Meehan was the first to leave the band, followed shortly thereafter by Jet Harris. Tony was replaced by ex-Krew Kats drummer Brian Bennett, and Jet by ex-Krew Kats bassist Brian ("Licorice") Locking, and later by John Rostill. The Shadows disbanded in 1968 but Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch subsequently formed a vocal–guitar trio, Marvin Welch & Farrar. The Shadows reformed in 1973 with fans demanding Shadows numbers at MW&F gigs. They disbanded again in 1990 but reformed in 2004-05 for a UK and European tour, and again during 2008–10 to tour with Cliff Richard. Born Brian Robson Rankin on 28 October 1941. His name, Hank Marvin, derived from his childhood nickname. His friends at the time were all called Brian, so each had to have a nickname, and he got Hank. The name Marvin, was "borrowed" from Marvin Rainwater. |
